Wine Tasting at Google San Francisco

I’ve realized there is no way to tell this story without it sounding crazy (in the best possible way). I’m gonna try to explain what happened from my viewpoint without bragging.

Having recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, Jules and I are constantly looking for new things to try/places to see/people to meet. Since we came out here with very few friends in the area, trying to finding new places to try basically means we need to rely on social media/ratings sites to find places that seem that we would like them. Having followed the GoogleDC twitter account when we were living in Annapolis, I decided that following the GoogleSF account was not only a good idea but a great place  to find new stuff.

Since we aren’t in San Francisco often (as we both work further south on the peninsula), we like to plan out where we would go for the weekends ahead of time. I started pinging the GoogleSF account, as well as a couple of other people I’ve found (@thedapperdiner is one) for advice on where to go/places to eat. Plus, the wine community in the Bay Area is one of the most welcoming communities I’ve ever encountered, so finding people to give me wine advice wasn’t hard to come by.  All three of these efforts started to converge without me realizing it.

A couple of weeks ago, I was made aware of Cabernet Day (#cabernetday on twitter). Having saw this day dedicated to a type of wine that I prefer on GoogleSF’s twitter account, I naturally started asking them questions about it. Turns out that Google and Zagat was hosting a Google+ video hangout on the topic around lunchtime that day that was going to be broadcasted worldwide. They ended up sending me a form for local (Bay Area) wine lovers to be included in future event invites. What I was about to be invited to ended up blowing my mind.

In short, I was invited to join Certified Sommelier Rick Bakas on air for Cabernet Day at Google’s San Francisco office and join them for the after party there as well. Cue jaw drop.

While I am not a wine expert, (working on it though) I jumped at the chance to do it. It was the right decision by far. I got to meet Amy and Ashley who were both in charge of the Google+ Local for the Bay Area and they toured me around the (totally awesome) Google office. While I could only take pictures in certain areas, and I’m not entirely sure what I’m allowed to say about the office, I think I can say that they have a slide and it’s awesome.

I also got to meet Rick Bakas in person (which was an honor) before he went on air with me (which I’m sure was crazy for him). Talking to Rick during/after the hangout was an enlightening experience, especially learning how he really got into learning wine post college. He wants to get people interested in learning more about the wine they are drinking; especially since knowledge is power in choosing wines that you drink. He is a very nice and down to earth guy and I hope to get to talk with him again.

The actual Google+ hangout was a bit nerve-wracking for me. It didn’t really hit me that I was going on air with wine experts in New York City, Paris, and California till they did the last video checks while we were sitting down. I’m pretty sure I was not tasting “correctly” but the wines we sampled on air were quite tasty. I learned about how Cabernet Franc is different from Cabernet Sauvignon and the proper temperature for serving red wine.  The group was great to talk to and I can’t wait to be a part of another Google+ hangout. (Due to a technical issue, sadly the hangout was not recorded to Youtube so you can’t see me try to make a fool of myself)

It was an incredible experience and I really appreciate Amy and Ashley letting me be a part of it all! I hope to do more with the Google+ group in the future and I can’t wait exploring San Francisco area more.
