DonutQuest 2012

This photowalk changed my thought process on photowalks in general. How? Let me explain.

A couple of months ago after the disastrous San Francisco Botanical Garden photowalk, I struggled to figure out how to make an impression in the Bay Area. There are a boatload of photo themed events ranging from free walks to paid classes. How could I convince people to come to a Photowalk Alliance walk (besides having a cool venue)?

Then one day, in the middle of an application to a job at Google San Francisco, an idea hit me. Why not include food with my photowalk? It could be fun, I thought, so I started researching what we could do. Being new to the Bay Area I’ve found that there are a ton of places that sell donuts. Just like that, DonutQuest was born.

I mapped out a route that would take us to four donut shops in the San Francisco city limits. All could be traveled to by bus (even though we ended up driving). veryone’s reaction to the foodie/photowalk hybrid concept shocked me. People thought it was brilliant. While I don’t know if I would use those words, it was a lot of fun to do.

With a sign-up list that doubled the amount of people signed up for the last photowalk and months of promotion, the day finally arrived. While it ended up raining in San Francisco, we still had an impressive turnout of new and familiar faces. We started tasting donuts and moving from location to location.

Along the way we lost a couple of people due to scheduling (or monsters). I even attempted Bob’s donut challenge. That challenge was eating a 12 inch (in diameter) donut in 3 minutes or less (record is 1:30). Needless to say, I didn’t win. I was roughly 40-50% done, depending on who you ask. By the time we reached the last location, the rain had stopped and the sun began to come out. We wandered on pier 39 for a bit before we went our separate ways. I had a blast and can’t wait to plan some new walks for 2013!

Oh and here is the list for Best Donut in SF (so far):
1. Bob’s Donuts
2. Trish’s Donuts
3. Happy Donuts
4. Allstar Donuts (this will remain at the bottom of the pile)
